Jozani Forest

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is a 50 km² national park in Tanzania, located on the island of Zanzibar. It is the only national park on the island.

The Zanzibar red colobus (Procolobus kirkii), a rainforest species found in the park, is also known as Kirk's red colobus. With a population of around 1,000, it has been adopted as the flagship species for conservation in Zanzibar since the mid-1990s. Other fauna include the Sykes' monkey, bush babies, more than 50 species of butterfly and 40 species of birds. The nocturnal Zanzibar tree hyrax is said to be the first hyrax species to have acclimatised to the forest. The park attracts roughly 10% of the over 100,000 visitors who come to Zanzibar every year.

Another animal once unique to the forests of Unguja Island is the Zanzibar leopard (Panthera pardus adersi), long believed to be extinct. In Swahili a leopard is called 'Chui' and features in local superstition — sorcerers were said to keep them as pets. It was last formally reported in the late 1990s, but trail-camera footage from a 2018 documentary series appears to have captured proof of the leopard's continued existence, sparking renewed interest and further protective enforcement.

The sea-grass beds of Chwaka Bay, fringed with mangrove forests, are important breeding grounds for marine organisms, including open-sea fish species. The mangroves are also valuable breeding grounds for birds. The bay has been proposed as a Ramsar Site and placed on Tanzania's tentative list for World Heritage Sites in recognition of its unique natural and cultural value.
